指在研究過程中意外發現的、超出研究範疇之外的資訊。若這些發現具有相當的重要性（如對參與者的健康、心理或社會福祉產生顯著影響），即為重要附帶發現（material incidental findings），研究人員有義務告知參與者。

unanticipated discoveries made during the course of research that fall outside the scope of the study. "Material incidental findings" are those interpreted as having substantial welfare implications—whether health-related, psychological,or social—for the participant. If such material incidental findings arise,researchers are obligated to inform the participant.
